ERWC
Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum (ERWC)
Edison's Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum (ERWC) courses do more than a traditional English class.
Through rigorous CSU-developed curriculum, students become confident readers, writers, researchers, and communicators.
ERWC was created by the California State University system. Edison offers ERWC 11 for Juniors and ERWC 12 for Seniors.
These A–G-approved English courses provide greater academic rigor than general ELA courses while offering more support than Advanced Placement courses.
ERWC 11: Junior English
ERWC 11 prepares juniors for the rigor of California state testing, senior-level English, and future college coursework. As a more challenging alternative to a general ELA 3 class, it serves as a middle ground between general English and AP English.
Using curriculum and materials developed by the CSU system, students read complex literary and informational texts, analyze authors’ arguments and rhetorical choices, participate in academic discussions, and produce evidence-based writing.
All students are welcome to register for ERWC 11! Students who were in English 2 Honors and students who found English 2 fairly easy are highly encouraged to join ERWC 11.
In ERWC 11, juniors:
- Prepare for the reading and writing demands of California state testing
- Analyze complex literary and informational texts
- Strengthen argumentative, analytical, and evidence-based writing
- Develop critical-reading and rhetorical-analysis skills
- Participate in collaborative academic discussions
- Build the independence needed for senior English and college-level coursework
ERWC 12: Senior English
ERWC 12 prepares seniors for the transition from high school to college, careers, and other postsecondary opportunities. In addition to completing rigorous CSU-developed reading and writing modules, students receive support with the CSU application process, scholarship applications, and scholarship writing.
Students also develop research questions and conduct independent research. Through this process, they evaluate credible sources, synthesize information, participate in evidence-based academic discourse, and communicate informed conclusions through extensive writing and discussion.
Seniors in ERWC 12 must be A-G complaint or have a plan to become A-G complaint with their counselors. All Senior students will be asked to fill out one college application as a part of their final grade.
In ERWC 12, seniors:
- Complete rigorous reading and writing modules developed by the CSU system
- Receive guidance through the CSU application process
- Search for scholarships and complete scholarship applications
- Write personal statements and scholarship essays
- Develop meaningful research questions
- Conduct independent research using credible sources
- Participate in evidence-based academic discourse
- Prepare for college-level reading, writing, research, and communication
Together, ERWC 11 and ERWC 12 provide Edison students with a supported pathway toward greater academic rigor, independence, and postsecondary success.
